Tourist guides do not require any specific training, apart from a thorough knowledge of the sector in which they work.
Mastery of several languages is a major asset.

Holders of the Mountain Leader Diploma are capable of guiding individuals or groups in rural mountain environments, excluding areas where progress requires the use of mountaineering equipment or techniques (glacial zones, rocks, canyons, etc.). They know how to lead and teach the knowledge and skills specific to the activity and the environment.
Holders of the High Mountain Guide Diploma are capable of supervising, teaching and leading independently various mountaineering and related activities (rock, snow and ice climbing, ski touring, snowboarding and rock climbing).
Each diploma requires 3 to 4 years of university study.
Degree Level
European diploma certifying the ability to lead groups in mountainous terrain and meeting compulsory safety requirements.
This diploma requires refresher training every 5 years.
Norwegian legislation does not require any compulsory qualifications, although training courses do exist.
